Cleanings & Exams

Routine dental cleanings, exams, and radiographs are the most important preventative treatments to help maintain a healthy smile.  Regular cleanings stop the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease.
While our doctors examine your teeth for cavities with the help of radiographs, evaluate you for the presence of gum disease and perform oral cancer screenings.

The other benefits of dental cleanings include:

Plaque Removal

Tartar and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems. Unfortunately, even with proper brushing and flossing at home, it can be impossible to remove all debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets. The experienced eye of a dentist or hygienist using specialized dental equipment is necessary to catch potentially damaging buildup.

A Healthier-Looking Smile

Stained and yellowed teeth can dramatically decrease the esthetics of a smile. Regular dental cleanings are an effective treatment in getting rid of these unsightly stains.

Fresher Breath

Bad breath (or halitosis) is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease. A combination of rotting food particles (possibly below the gum line) and potential gangrene stemming from gum infection, results in bad breath. The routine removal of plaque, calculus and bacteria at our facility can noticeably improve halitosis and reduce infection.

To keep your teeth and gums healthy, we recommend that dental cleanings be performed twice annually as a preventative measure, but should be completed more frequently for those suffering with periodontal issues.

Worried about sensitive teeth and gums? Our highly trained dental team offers several options to make your dental cleaning as comfortable as possible.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Cancers and other systemic diseases can be detected early with oral cancer screenings.  While most oral cancers are on the decline, HPV-related cancers are on the rise. This important service is performed during your routine dental check-ups by our doctors, another reason to schedule regular appointments with your dentist!

Sealants

Highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth, dental sealants are a simple procedure in which a tooth-colored coating is painted onto the surface of the tooth. This procedure does not require drilling and effectively “seals” the deep grooves, acting as a barrier and protecting enamel from plaque and acids.  Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and can last several years before a reapplication is needed.

Children and adults can benefit from sealants in the fight against tooth decay and in most cases, this service is covered 100% by your dental insurance.

Periodontal Disease Therapy

An infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place is called periodontal disease or “gum disease”. In addition to tooth loss and bad breath, leaving this untreated is a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, and low birth weight. With the help of our doctors and hygienists, we can develop a treatment plan that is specific to your needs.

Dental X-Rays

Dental x-rays (radiographs) help determine how healthy your mouth is.  Our dentists use these images to detect cavities, infections, bone loss, and even lesions of the jaw.  To catch problems early and ensure timely treatment, it is recommended to take x-rays regularly, based on your individual needs.
